Early career

Formerly a construction worker, Welling was spotted by casting director Jennifer Starr in 1998 at a party in Nantucket while looking for new talent for a Tommy Hilfiger advertisement. She suggested that he try modeling. Before moving to Los Angeles in 2000, Welling worked as a model for Louisa Modeling Agency. While pursuing an acting career, he modeled there for Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Calvin Klein. Welling plays Angela Via’s romantic interest in the 2000 music video “Picture Perfect” for the song. Welling has claimed that because modeling was all done from the outside or from an outside perspective, he did not enjoy it and was not good at it.

Welling pursued acting because he wanted to portray a variety of emotions, but he occasionally still models. Welling made an appearance in the so-called Superhero edition of Vogue’s May 2008 edition. In the second season of the CBS legal drama Judging Amy, which aired in 2001, Welling played Rob “Karate Rob” Meltzer, a younger love interest of Amy Gray (Amy Brenneman). This was his first significant acting role. Welling was originally contracted for three episodes, but the producers decided to keep him for three more after hearing positive reviews. Additionally, Welling appeared in the pilot episode of the short-lived Fox sitcom Undeclared and had a brief part in the UPN science fiction sitcom Special Unit 2’s first season.

Smallville

Following an extensive search for an actor to portray Clark Kent, Welling was chosen for the WB superhero drama Smallville. Welling described the day of his audition for the part in an interview with a teen magazine, saying, “I was on my way back from the Warner Bros. studio and I stopped in a gas station to phone my manager and tell him how it went. He said, “Can you hold on a second?” when I called and managed to get him on the line. The next thing I know, there are seven individuals on the other end of the line, all of whom are saying, “Tom, you got it!'” With 8.4 million viewers, the pilot earned The WB’s highest-rated debut when it aired in October 2001.

Welling admitted to TV Guide that he twice turned down the lead part before deciding to accept it after reading the screenplay. Before being chosen to play Clark Kent, he, like Christopher Reeve, had never been a fan of Superman. In fact, he continued to avoid Superman comics, saying, “I made a conscious choice to avoid that stuff. Before all of that, we’re doing something new, and I don’t want it to even slightly influence what I’m doing. He did had the opportunity to interact with two former Superman actors: Dean Cain (who appeared in season 7’s “Cure”) and Christopher Reeve (who appeared in season 2’s “Rosetta” episode 17).

In addition to being named one of the “Breakthrough Stars of 2001” by People magazine, Welling won the 2002 Teen Choice Award for “Choice Breakout Star (Male)” for his portrayal of Clark Kent. In an interview with Smallville Magazine after the third season, Welling stated that if he could play any other character on the show besides Clark Kent, it would be Lex Luthor; “Lex Luthor! As an actor, getting to portray the exact antithesis of your role is the pinnacle, so I wouldn’t mind getting my head shaved.

Since Smallville was already in production, Welling claims he met with director Brett Ratner in 2003 to discuss possibly playing Clark Kent/Superman in the superhero movie Superman Returns (2006). Comic book artist Alex Ross even created two sketches of Welling as the “Man of Steel” to see how the actor would appear in the well-known costume. In August 2009, Welling won another Teen Choice Award as “Choice TV Actor (Action Adventure)” for Smallville.

With his Smallville co-star Erica Durance as Lois Lane, Welling returned to his role as Clark Kent in the Batwoman episode of the CW Arrowverse crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths” in 2019. Welling’s comeback wrapped up the tale of Clark’s previous life, which had depicted him giving up his superhuman abilities, retiring as an ordinary farmer, and having at least two daughters with Lois.

For me, that was the main attraction.

After reading the script, I realized how much I adored Charlie as a character. I identified with what he went through and what he had to go through, and I thought I knew him. I merely wished to take part in it.[5] Welling declared that he “absolutely loved” working with Martin and that he had always been an admirer of his.
