Austin Iornongu Iwar is a Nigerian neo-soul singer, songwriter, record producer, composer, and sound engineer. He was born on June 9, 1997, and goes by his stage name Tay Iwar. Iwar inked publishing agreements with Warner Chappell Music in 2022 and Soulection in 2018 for licensing rights. Along with his brothers Suté and Terna Iwar, he created the Bantu Collective. He is credited with creating the Alté music genre.

Born in Marina on June 9, 1997, Austin Iornongu Iwar grew up in both Lagos and Abuja. Austin is the son of Vivian Iwar, the mother, and Austin Iwar, the father. His older brother Suté Iwar was a major musical influence on him in his early years. At the age of fourteen, Austin started making music with FL Studio, a digital music program. He discussed his experience at the Rivers State TED conference in 2015.

Alongside his brother Suté Iwar, Tay Iwar (previously Tay) entered the music scene in 2014. In the same year, they established Bantu Collective, an entertainment firm in Abuja for music distribution and production, along with a photo studio run by Terna Iwar. Iwar started his music career on SoundCloud with a cover of Jai Paul’s “Zion Wolf” as Tay, then shortly after that, on April 20, 2014, he published his mixtape Passport through BANTU. Because of this, he was nominated for Choice Song of the Year at the 4th Nigerian Teens Choice Awards in 2015.

Renascentia, a seven-track EP he released on April 22, 2016, featured Sute Iwar. The song “Equestrian Love” from the extended-release Renascentia was included in Skinny Girl in Transit season 3’s soundtrack in 2017. “Equestrian Love” became well-known[14] and trended on Twitter soon after the third season of Skinny Girl in Transit debuted in February. M.I. shared the song at that same moment. He opens for Aṣa at the Encore “Live In Lagos” Concert 2017 at the Eko Convention Center in Lagos on April 29, 2017.

In 2018, Tay Iwar, Mr. Eazi, Tekno, WurlD, Cina Soul, Stonebwoy, and Vanessa Mdee signed a single publishing deal with Universal Music Group Nigeria. His self-produced tune “Video Star” marked the release of his first single under Universal Music Group Nigeria on January 30, 2018. In collaboration with Director K, he released the music video for “Video Star” on February 3, 2018, under the Universal Music Group Nigeria banner. OkayAfrica shortlisted “Video Star” for their selection of the Top 10 Nigerian songs of the month. On August 17, 2018, he received credit as the sound engineer and record producer of “504”, a song by Jon Ogah, a fictitious housemate from Big Brother Naija season 2 in 2017.

Tay Iwar announced his publishing and distribution agreement with Soulection on August 26, 2018, along with the release of 1997, a collection of singles under Soulection that included “Space,” “Sugardaddy,” and “Miracle Girl” as the lead tracks off his first album GEMINI, which was released on March 29, 2019. Odunsi (The Engine), Suté Iwar, Preyé, Cruel Santino, and Odunsi make guest appearances on the album. The album’s track “Utero” got him a nomination for the 14th Headies’ Best Vocal Performance (Male) category. The GEMINI studio album’s tracks “Diamond” and “Keeps” were played on Soulection radio on April 13, 2019. He has a cameo with Projexx on the 2020 Wizkid Made in Lagos album track “True Love”.

He co-wrote “Steady” from the deluxe version, which was released on August 27, 2021. This got him a nomination for Best Global Music Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, his first at the ceremony. In the same year, he co-wrote Dave’s song “System” from the studio album We’re All Alone in This Together and appeared on the “Special Kinda” Tiwa Savage Water & Garri EP. Tay debuted “True Love” with Wizkid at the Made in Lagos Tour in London’s O2 Arena on December 1, 2021.

He entered into a joint venture with The Flight Club to secure a global publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music on January 14, 2022. Wizkid released the music video for “True Love” on March 29, 2022, and it features Tay Iwar and Projexx. Winnie Harlow, a Jamaican-Canadian model, and Wizkid starred in Nabil Elderkin’s film “True Love”. He released “Bad4u” on June 17, 2022, and the music video followed on June 19 of the same year. Iwar released “Healing” in 2023 as the lead song from his Summer Breeze EP. He released the music video for “Healing” on March 3, 2023. Iwar released “Undercover Lover” on May 11, 2023, as the second single of his debut EP, Summer Breeze.

As the third single off his debut EP Summer Breeze, Iwar released “Summer Breeze” with Juls on June 8, 2023. After his single “Summer Breeze” was launched, he later backed it up with the release of his fifth extended play, Summer Breeze, which was made available through CoolSweat on June 9, 2023, under the licensing of Believe Music’s UK branch. Guest artists on the debut EP include American rapper IDK, Nigerian vocalist Twelve XII, Ghanaian music producer Juls, and British rappers Knucks and Kojey Radical.
