Abuja to Kaduna Train Attack: A Terrifying Incident

On a February evening, a train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna fell victim to an unsettling attack.

According to reliable sources, the train was targeted by unknown assailants, resulting in an explosion on the tracks and gunfire.

Reports suggest that the driver narrowly escaped death, being pulled from his seat in what can only be described as a miraculous rescue.

Among the passengers was Garba Mohammad, the former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kaduna, who was suspected to be a target of the attack.

Mohammad shared his experience, explaining that the journey had initially gone smoothly.

However, as the train approached its final destination at Rigasa, just two stations away, a loud explosion rang out, halting the train.

At this point, the passengers were informed that there was limited security, only a few police officers were present about 40 kilometers from Rigasa.

He described a chaotic and uncomfortable situation as the train’s electricity failed, disabling air conditioning.

The absence of network coverage left passengers without communication, and the lack of water forced some to drink from the toilet taps, making the restroom facilities unusable.

Mohammad said;

“We were stranded for four hours. We heard the loud sound, and then security officers instructed us to take cover while they moved around.”

In response to the crisis, military reinforcements were deployed, and the train was escorted safely to Rigasa four hours later with a new security convoy.

When asked whether the attack was carried out by bandits, Garba Mohammad noted that while some passengers speculated it was an attack, he personally felt there was no immediate threat during the ordeal.

“We were stranded, but there was no direct threat to our lives,” he explained.

Though the incident was unsettling, the passengers, including Garba Mohammad, were ultimately safe, and the situation highlighted ongoing concerns over security along the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor.
