Who is Rachin Ravindra?

Rachin Ravindra’s 36-ball fifty on his World Cup debut was just the beginning for the 23-year-old for New Zealand against the reigning champions on the biggest stage in the world, and it put England on the back foot, but who is he? Let’s learn more about the all-around player of Indian descent:

You may have first heard about Rachin Ravindra when he played his first Test match in India against India in November 2021. Currently playing for New Zealand in the World Cup, Ravindra is a legitimate white-ball talent. After taking the crucial wicket of Harry Brook in the World Cup 2023 opener in Ahmedabad, Ravindra, who batted at No. 3 against England, hammered a 36-ball fifty to give the Jos Buttler-led team a taste of their own medicine.

You would have assumed that he is Indian or has Indian ancestry only from the name. Given that Ravindra was born in Wellington, New Zealand to Indian parents Ravi Krishnamurthy and Deepa Krishnamurthy, the second statement is accurate in his instance. Ravi, a software system architect and the founder of the Hutt Hawks Club, was an avid cricket fan who immigrated to New Zealand in the 1990s from Bengaluru. This may be seen in the way he named his son, emulating the names of two of the greatest Indian batters, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, with the suffix “chin.”

When Ravindra was included in New Zealand’s Under-19 side, he made his cricketing debut. In 2016 and 2018, Ravindra continued to play in the U-19 World Cup. Ravindra created a lasting impression in New Zealand’s domestic cricket league before making his debut in the Twenty20 Internationals in 2021.

He made his Test debut after playing six Twenty20 Internationals. But with just 73 runs in three Test matches, he had yet to establish himself in the format, therefore the ODI spot remained elusive. But after a few solid performances for New Zealand in white-ball cricket and in domestic cricket, he was able to play in the ODIs at the beginning of this year and is now a regular member of the team.

Coming off a huge blow in the practise match against Pakistan, Ravindra came out swinging because 283 wasn’t a very intimidating target. He was able to play through the line and cause Mark Wood a lot of problems because he could exploit the pace and play through gaps since the surface in Ahmedabad remained true.

In just 96 balls, the 23-year-old has already hammered an undefeated 123 as his World Cup debut continues to get better. New Zealand overcame the incumbent champions in the 2019 World Cup final because to an undefeated 273-run partnership between Ravindra and Conway.
