Andlauer was raised in the Notre-Dame-de-Grace neighborhood of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was born in France. Andlauer studied at Toronto’s York University before leaving to start working for McCain Foods.

Andlauer, who was now in charge of McCain’s trucking division, left the company in 1991 to start Andlauer Transportation Services, a trucking business that transported prescription drugs.

The Montreal Canadiens’ minor-league affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League (AHL), added Andlauer as a co-owner in 2003. The next year, he acquired a larger ownership stake in the franchise, which he sold to the Canadiens in 2015. The franchise was later moved by the Canadiens, and it is currently known as the Laval Rocket. Simultaneously, he acquired the Belleville Bulls junior team from the Ontario Hockey League and relocated them to Hamilton, Ontario, giving them the new name Hamilton Bulldogs.

In 2009, Andlauer joined the consortium of investors led by Geoff Molson to purchase the Canadiens, together with the Bell Centre and Gillett Entertainment consortium. Later on, he would be appointed by the team as the NHL Board of Governors’ alternate governor.

Andlauer was one of several potential buyers of the Ottawa Senators, which were put up for sale following the passing of their owner, Eugene Melnyk, from June 2022 until June 2023. It was revealed in June 2023 that Andlauer and his consortium of financiers had inked a deal to acquire the club for an approximate sum of US$950 million. On September 21, 2023, Andlauer, his partners, the daughters of Eugene Melnyk, and a group of Canadian businesspeople assumed controlling ownership.

The Senators are expected to be purchased by Michael Andlauer for $950 million.

Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia has reported that billionaire Michael Andlauer of Toronto is close to taking over as the Ottawa Senators’ next owner. At a significant $950 million, the agreement in principle is pending approval from the NHL executive board and commissioner Gary Bettman.

Andlauer, who is a member of the NHL Board of Governors and presently owns a minority position in the Montreal Canadiens, will have to give up his ownership in the Habs for the sale to go through.

The Weeknd, a Canadian singer, and Andlauer, Jeffrey, and Michael Kimel of Harlo Capital were the final candidates left in the torturous Senators’ sale process. Andlauer seems to have been the go-to buyer, though.

By the deadline of May 15, four parties had submitted offers; Michael Andlauer was reportedly given preference by the NHL because of his long-term plans for the team. Interestingly, he agrees with the Senators’ agreement of understanding with the National Capital Commission (NCC) for a new rink at LeBreton Flats, which was inked last year, regarding the construction of a new downtown arena.
