Who Is Lawan Ahmad?

Lawan Ahmad works as a director, producer, and actor. His stage name, Lawan Ahmad Izzar So, is currently his most well-known one.

In Katsina State’s Bakori Local Government Area, he was born. After attending Bakori’s Nadabo Primary School, Lawan moved to Kano State’s Government Day Secondary School Sharada to finish his SSCE.

He also has a diploma in public administration from the Federal College of Education Kano.

How did you start your filmmaking career?

My childhood desire has always been to become an actor, and during my secondary education, I took part in school stage drama.

Thus, with Kannywood slowly emerging at the time, I saw an opportunity to fulfill my boyhood goal when I graduated from high school in 1999 and moved to Kano to live with my uncle.

When I first started, I realized that acting is a career process that allows one to legally earn a living, rather than just being a teenage exuberant.

I committed myself that day to learn as much as I could about the business, and I went from being an actor to a producer and then a director.

Could you briefly describe your acting career?

Izna was the first movie I worked on, though I’m not sure if it’s been released at the time I’m talking to you. You’ll be interested to hear that I had one acting role in that movie.

That was my first movie, but I gained notoriety for playing the younger brother of the late Ahmed S. Nuhu in the movie “Siradi.” My big break came with that movie.

Later, I had the lead role in the FKD Film Production Company-produced movie “Zuma,” which launched my great career.

What difficulties did you encounter when you decided to become an actor?

Both my buddies and my relatives presented me with significant obstacles. I entered the field when most people disapproved of it.

I had the difficult task of explaining to them at that time that being a filmmaker has advantages and disadvantages like any other job. I informed them that I had selected the positive aspect of it.

After I moved to Kano, I lived with my uncle, who is a well-known Islamic scholar. After I informed him I was going into the film business, he started questioning me.

I was successful in persuading him and with good cause. He blessed me after giving me some advice.

What has been the secret of your success over the past twenty years?

My first secret is to surrender everything to God. God, in my opinion, has the final say in all a person does in this life.

Instead of praising myself for any accomplishments, I give thanks to God every day for the gift of life.

The blessings from my mother are the second secret. My mum often asks God to bless me. I don’t think I have any other secrets besides these.

Do you mean that you’ve entered the political arena?

Yes, I had a political career once, and I even had aspirations to hold office in 2019. I haven’t cut myself off entirely, but right now the film industry is my main worry.

Does living in Kannywood make sense?

It is, of course. I’ve visited locations I never would have imagined visiting. Thanks to my career in movies, I now have a car, a house, a business, and a marriage.

All I could say is “Glory be to Allah.” It is worth all the difficulty to live at Kannywood.

Could you tell us a little bit about your highly anticipated television series?

One TV show that is reportedly the most watched on YouTube is called “Izzar So.” As the show’s producer, I would like to keep my mouth shut. There is no one better to tell you more than the public.

It’s a series of social reorientations inspired by what’s going on in the world right now. It is a collaborative effort between myself and the late Nura Mustapha Waye, the film’s director.

Now in its eighth season, the show is doing incredibly well. Sadly, the director passed away a few months ago.

True, his departure has left a void that cannot be replaced, but life continues, and his passing had a profound impact on us. I hope his kind spirit is at peace.

What is the key to a successful TV show, in your opinion?

payment of actors and actresses promptly. For example, I have given every artist on this TV series a monthly wage under my production firm, and I have no problem with artists’ duties. To be clear, I don’t believe that any Kannywood producer is currently underpaying musicians.

As an artist, when have you been happiest?

Whenever I hear the well wishes and prayers from my fans, it makes me the happiest. I get calls every day from fans who pray for me, and it makes my heart happy to hear from them.

As a practitioner, what brings you down?

When people call us miscreants, it hurts me. It is regrettable that individuals still do not realize that filmmaking is a real job, much like any other industry.

You cannot discount the reality that, as in any other field, there are excellent and bad people; yet, it would be incorrect to categorize everyone as awful.
