1. His Son Maasai Mohandas Singleton Is a USC Graduate  & Screenwriter

Maasai Mohandas Singleton was born April 3, 1994. He performed in his father’s 2001 drama Baby Boy and then attended USC’s School of Cinematic Art. He launched a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for his college education, and he explained why in an open letter to Black Girl Nerd.

“When I was eleven years old, my father went to court to get custody of me from my mother, and he promised my grandfather that he would educate me. “It was my family’s only solace in being separated from me,” he wrote. “But because of his weakness as a jealous and manipulative person in his life, my father has decided to stop paying tuition in my last semester of college and to tell me only one month before the semester was to begin.”

Maasai finally earned a BFA in screenwriting in 2016. Singleton celebrated his son’s graduation on Instagram, writing, “My son Maasai Mohandas Singleton has graduated from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts with a BFA in Screenwriting! The same major as his father! I am very proud! He is on his way! Watch out!”

2. He Had a Daughter Hadar Busia-Singleton With His Ex-Wife Akosua

Singleton was married to actress Akosua Busia from 1996 to 1997. During this time, they welcomed a daughter named Hadar Busia-Singleton. Hadar, like her mother, began acting at an early age, attending the Interlochen Arts Academy and made her film debut in the 2003 play Tears of the Sun. To date, Tears of the Sun has been her sole credit.

Akosua reminisced about being a mother on her website, claiming that she took time away from her work to raise her daughter. “I’d always said that when I have a baby, I would come out of acting until my child turned eighteen,” she wrote in an email. “This is not my advice or even my suggestion for anyone else, it was my purpose and desire.”

“So apart from being in the film Tears of the Sun (which from driving a friend to audition for, I was recognized by the Casting Director and ended up working in Hawaii during summer vacation with my then four-year-old daughter, Hadar, playing my daughter), I did not act in film, television, or stage for eighteen years,” she went on to say.

Hadar is the granddaughter of Ghana’s former Prime Minister, Kofi Abrefa Busia, and a member of the Wenchi Royal Family.

3. He Was Forced to Renegotiate His Child Support In 2015

Singleton was compelled to go to court in 2015 after his ex-wife accused him of not paying enough child support. According to Bossip, the filmmaker’s financial woes prompted the judge to reduce the amount of child support he had to pay each month.

Singleton reportedly earned $14,500 each month with more than $24,000 in costs, including $8,300 in mortgages for residences in Los Angeles and Miami. He said he was financially liable for his other children as well. Judge Tamzarian reduced the amount of child support but ordered Singleton to pay his ex $68,000 in retroactive tuition for their daughter’s education.

“The court finds there is a material change in circumstance regarding the child support order contained in the judgment entered March 18, 1998, and the modification of support entered January 28, 2002, based upon petitioner’s decrease in income, and the amount of tuition now being paid for Hadar,” the judge wrote in his ruling.

4. His Daughter Cleopatra Singleton Is Currently a Sophomore In College

Cleopatra Singleton also appeared in one of her father’s films, the aforementioned Baby Boy, and is currently a sophomore in college. However, she has received greater attention for the statements she made about her father’s health. According to the Wrap, Cleopatra believed Singleton was not in a coma and that his medical status was being “misrepresented” by her grandma, Sheila Ward.

Cleopatra indicated that she wanted her brother Maasai to be named conservator of her father and his estate, and she even described Ward’s behavior toward the rest of the family as “disturbing.” She went on to state that her father’s condition was “progressing” before his death and that she believed he may have fully recovered.

“[Sheila Ward] has abused this position, particularly about the support of his children,” Cleopatra was quoted as saying. “Unfortunately, my father has allowed his mother to remain in that position out of fear and obligation to her, as she has mistreated and abandoned my father since he was a young child, leaving him emotionally vulnerable. She had already said that she intended to liquidate his assets promptly and leave his children with nothing, even going so far as to sell his house and remove his girlfriend and infant son from the premises.”
