Geoffrey Makhubo biography
South African politician Moloantoa Geoffrey Makhubo (born 8 February 1968; passed away 9 July 2021) held the office of mayor of Johannesburg from December 2019 till his passing from COVID-19 in July 2021. He was the regional chair of the African National Congress and a member of the organization. He was the MMC (Member of the Mayoral Committee) for Finance during Parks Tau’s presidency.

Geoffrey Makhubo Early life and education
Makhubo was born in Soweto, in the former Transvaal Province, in 1968. In 1990, he graduated with a BComm from the University of the Witwatersrand. He completed a lot of advanced management coursework. At Wits Business School, Makhubo completed a Management Advancement Programme (MAP) in 1997. From the University of Cape Town, he also received a certificate in leadership in local government. He was enrolled at Wits University to pursue a master’s degree at the time of his passing in 2021.
Geoffrey Makhubo Politics
In his youth, Makhubo served as the president of the African National Congress Youth League. Under Parks Tau’s mayoral administration, he served as the Johannesburg MMC for Finance. During Tau’s tenure as mayor, he also served as the Governance Cluster’s chairperson and the Leader of Executive Business in Council. Makhubo has previously held the position of Co-President of the Metropolis Global Fund for Cities’ Development (FMDV).
In the Greater Johannesburg Region of the African National Congress, he had previously held significant leadership positions. Prior to taking on the role of regional head in July 2018, he served as the regional treasurer. After Parks Tau resigned from the municipal council in May 2019, he was chosen to serve as the ANC caucus leader.
Geoffrey Makhubo Mayoralty
After Herman Mashaba of the Democratic Alliance resigned, the African National Congress stated on November 28 that Makhubo had been nominated for the role of mayor. On December 4, 2019, he was formally elected to the position after receiving 137 of 268 votes. Funzela Ngobeni of the DA won 101 votes, while Musa Novela of the EFF received 30.
Makhubo came into office amid a great deal of controversy because, while serving as Finance MMC, Regiments Capital, a company linked to the ongoing State Capture investigations, paid R30 million to his company, prompting accusations of egregious corruption from both the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters.
Makhubo gave a testimony at The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture on November 27, 2020.
Makhubo was charged with corruption in May 2021 after interactions with the EOH Group, according to the Zondo Commission.

While Parks Tau was mayor, he served as the finance MMC for Johannesburg.
Geoffrey has held executive positions within the ANC’s Greater Johannesburg Region.
He served as the region’s treasurer as well. He took over as the area’s leader in July 2018.
After Parks Tau resigned in 2019, Geoffrey was chosen to serve as the ANC’s “Caucus Leader” in the municipal council.

On July 9, 2021, Makhubo passed away from complications caused by COVID-19. He had spent a week in the hospital.
