Divya Deshmukh, born on December 9, 2005, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, is a celebrated Indian chess player who earned the title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in 2021, International Master (IM) in 2023, and was officially awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2025 after winning the FIDE Women’s World Cup.
She was part of India’s gold medal-winning team at the 2020 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad, won the Indian Women’s Chess Championship in 2022, and secured an individual bronze medal at the 2022 Women’s Chess Olympiad.
In 2023, she clinched the Asian Continental Women’s Championship and the Tata Steel India Women’s Rapid.
She continued her stellar rise by winning the Sharjah Challengers in May 2024, becoming the World U-20 Girls Champion in June 2024, and helping India win team gold at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, also earning a board gold medal.
In 2025, she made history by defeating top players like Zhu Jiner, Harika Dronavalli, Tan Zhongyi, and Koneru Humpy to win the FIDE Women’s World Cup, becoming the first Indian woman to do so and qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament.
